| The most common ways of fundraising, especially for smaller groups will be by applying for grants, for example from trusts, companies, Southwark Council or central government.
These will normally require a written application either in the form of a letter or completing a proposal form. Funders receive far more requests than they can fund so you need your request to be appropriate and as articulate and succinct as possible. CAS’s ‘Simple Guide to Making a Fundraising Application’ is a good introduction.
Contracts are becoming an increasingly important way of raising funds form statutory sources. You will often have to complete a formal tender process to gain these.
An important piece of work in developing your funding application will be preparing a budget. You will also need to show how you are going to monitor and evaluate your work.
Your group will need to have a governing document as well as the right policies and procedures and financial systems to show funders that you are professional.
Once you have got all the information you need the next step will be to find a suitable funder. Target your application carefully otherwise you will be wasting your time.
CAS’s funding e-bulletins and funding training sessions are free for Southwark organisations. CAS can support your staff, volunteers or trustees with all aspects of fundraising. Contact our fundraising officer
